BiblioWeb and Intranet
Research Group
A research group may have 5 to 30 people working on several projects. There may also be collaborators in
other locations. With BiblioWeb, all people in the same group can share a single bibliographic database. Best
of all, collaborators located in other parts of the country or the world can have access as well.
Department
To promote knowledge sharing among different research groups, the whole department can set up a single
bibliographic database that is accessible by all faculties and students. Bibliographic records can be organized
into different folders. This will not only save a lot of redundant work for different research groups, it will also give
students a good start at following the latest literature in their fields. Since it is accessible on the web, new records can be added directly into the database, even from computers in the library.
Enterprise
For companies doing research and development, there is usually at least one full time librarian supporting all
the research scientists. The librarian may have to do many literature searches for different researchers. It is a
difficult job to deliver the search results in a consistent form, give other people access, etc. If a traditional
desktop bibliographic software is used, the program has to be installed on a large number of machines. The
cost for the software as well as the maintenance cost could be extremely high. With BiblioWeb, the information
specialist needs only install the software once on a single machine. All researchers in the company can
access it through their web browser. The delivery of literature search results is instant, researchers will obtain a
consistent and easy to use interface, and it can be accessed from any computer in the company.
