Biblioscape Network Environment
Biblioscape Is Network Ready
Biblioscape uses its own database engine to access databases on a local machine or a remote machine in a
network environment. Network capability is built in. All you need to do is move Biblioscape database files to a
common drive on the file server, and the database can then be used by multiple users at the same time.
Biblioscape supports file server technology to serve multiple users without any extra cost. The engine applies record level locking so multiple users can edit different records at the same time.
File Server Technology
The main advantages of file server technology are somewhat low cost and ease of maintenance compared to Client/Server setup. You only need to buy a copy of Biblioscape for each machine. In a client/server
environment it is a good idea to have a copy of Biblioscape on the server as well which potentially adds to the
cost. Although it is not absolutely necessary to have a copy of Biblioscape running on the server machine, it is
a good idea to do so because many activities are much quicker on a local database than from a client's PC.
With file server technology, there is no need to spend additional money on the database server. It is ideal for department wide implementation.
In a file server environment all the data has to be first requested from the file server and then returned to the
local machine to be processed. A bottleneck in network traffic can arise quickly when more and more users
request the information from the server. Therefore, for company-wide implementation of Biblioscape, we recommend using the BiblioRemote client/server technology that is built into Biblioscape.
